Let's Read: Multipliers, Ch. 2, the talent magnet
Wiseman shares a few stories about people who work for Diminishers and Multipliers. Those on a Diminisher's team is likely to feel unmotivated about their work and either eventually quit or quiet-quit. Those on a Multiplier's team grows their talent (she mentions in ch 1 that a Multiplier is likely to subscribe to the growth mindset).
Things a Multiplier would do:
- Name the genius. For each and every single person on a given team, the Multiplier can describe the thing that person can contribute best; even better, name it as it happens, to their face. No empty praises; these are praises with substance.
- Let them grow into it. Set high expectations. The team might struggle with a challenging task for a little at first, but let them sort it out. Trust that they can figure it out.
- Let go of a superstar. Team members sometimes outgrows your team. Multipliers are OK with that. Diminishers might sabotage someone's growth to try to keep them on their team for egotistical purposes.
The author the challenges the reader to take one of these suggestions and commit to trying it out – it's a muscle that can be trained.
